My Day with the iPad

"Whose iPad Day is it?"  That the question our second grade teacher, Mrs. Kampian gets most mornings.  She started off the year piloting the iPad for the primary grades.  She was asked by administrators, "how would you use this tool in your classroom?" It was important to her that all of the students had a chance to manipulate the iPad throughout the whole day.  She came up with the theme, My Day with the iPad.

The iPad Student of the Day would be responsible for the iPad throughout the morning Math meeting.  During this time the child would access The Weather Channel application and would report on the temperature, precipitation, and future forecast to the rest of the students.  This information is recorded on the Daily Temperatures Line Graph for the entire year so that the students may compare temperatures monthly. Throughout the rest of the day the students would have the opportunity to use the following applications: StarGuide - when studying Solar System and reading related stories ie: Henry and Mudge and the Starry, Starry Night.  The "This Day in History" app gives facts about what happend throughout history on each date.  For reading the Sight Words app increases vocabulary and fluency and the Ipad can also read aloud stories to children which increases thier fluency.  The apps such as Treasure Hunt, Tiles Puzzle and UnderSea Math may be used during Math or Centers time to increase Math fact apptitude.  Fun but educational apps like Stack the States and Tangram Puzzle Pro are used to enhance skills while teaching problem solving. Additional apps such as the Birthday Party, Whiteboard, and Simple Music allow for more creative individual or group time activities.  Overall the iPad is used in all subjects by all students meeting them at their level and taking them beyond.  They have immensely enjoyed their turns and can't wait for their "iPad Day".
